The conservation of tropical forests
is the solution to climate change

Forests and climate change

We provide technical advice for the conservation of forests and water sources as a fundamental solution to climate change.

We support and advise on the implementation of various schemes such as REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) and Reciprocal Water Agreements (*), at the national and subnational levels, connecting with low-emission and climate-resilient development strategies in cities and at the national level in line with the NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions). We also support the welfare of vulnerable populations (indigenous peoples, women, children and adolescents, people with disabilities, etc.).

Our services

Forests, which cover a significant surface of the planet, store substantial amounts of carbon and are home to most of the earth’s biodiversity, in addition to improving the quality of air, soil, and water, making them one of the most cost-effective and fundamental ways to mitigate climate change. The route toward a resilient and low-carbon development must be coordinated alongside the environmental, social, and economic processes of each country, to boost a bioeconomy and promote the development of sustainable cities, and away from deforestation.

We provide advice on assessing the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation and on identifying opportunities for forest carbon conservation, management, and enhancement. We support the development of national GHG inventory systems in the context of the UNFCCC. Well-developed national GHG inventory systems will ensure consistency between forest reference (emissions) levels, REDD+ results reports, and national GHG inventory estimates.

SASA recognizes the value of the REDD+ scheme in the Latin American region, and therefore provides advice on its implementation, integrating this scheme with other ongoing processes at both the subnational and regional levels. This seeks to enhance the impact of forest, soil and water conservation initiatives. Likewise, through REDD+ climate finance, it seeks to establish strategies that connect the benefits of forest services (local and subnational levels) with initiatives, projects and actions at the national level.

(1): AFOLU: Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use sector

SASA has an innovative and comprehensive vision offering solutions that connect the work in sustainable and resilient cities with the area of forests and climate change and thus improve the management of water and forests increasing the quality of life of the people. Water source conservation is key to proper water management in cities and it is water that connects people to forests.

We provide technical advice on the implementation of REDD+ programs and projects, water source conservation, water footprint measurement, and development of carbon offset schemes. We implement emission reduction strategies and compliance with Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC)

Within AFOLU's initiatives, SASA advises on the calculation of emissions from your agricultural activity, carbon footprint and studies on product life cycle, measuring the impact on emissions of your actions to reduce the impact of your activity in terms of GHG emissions and thus participate in mitigation projects in the voluntary or formal market.

SASA provides support and guidance in generating the easy-to-use Carbon Footprint field calculator, with which you can easily estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the activities of your agricultural operation, including both direct and indirect emissions from electricity consumption and crops.

In order to strengthen the initiatives of the agricultural sector, SASA offers the following services:

- Designing a measurement program.
- Quantifying livestock sector inventories of both large livestock and small animals, changes in livestock inventories and fluxes of major GHG sources and sinks, including: GHG emissions from soils, methane emissions due to enteric fermentation in ruminants and non-ruminants.
- Using field measurements to estimate mitigation potential on a larger scale and make your mitigation actions visible, as well as your impact on meeting the SDGs.

SASA provides technical advice for the implementation of strategies that connect the national level with the subnational level and the local needs of the regions. We provide advice on mitigation and adaptation strategies for cities with the maintenance and conservation of ecosystem services, nature-based solutions, and connecting with lowland indigenous peoples. The advice it provides is focused on:

- Advice on the implementation of Cancun requirements and the Warsaw Framework at national and sub-national levels (working with regional governments).
- Support in the implementation of REDD+ strategies at the subnational level.
- Support in the implementation of NDCs at national and subnational levels.
- REDD+ project development.
- Advice on accessing green finance for nature-based solutions and LULUCF initiatives.
- Voluntary markets.
- Carbon offsetting schemes.
